We are sorry that we must CANCEL the event due to weather. (But we will be able to hold it in 2026).
Join us for a creative afternoon at Robbins Farm Park, when children can make a fun art project led by art teacher Kathy Lobo. In this hands-on workshop, families will have the chance to sew their ownthree-dimensional birds using cotton bird shapes, button eyes, and decorations. If you prefer to draw, we’ll supply paper, bird books, and art supplies to inspire beautiful 2D bird creations.
We’ll also tune into the real birds in the park! Together we’ll listen for bird songs and try to identify as many species as we can. Families are encouraged to download the free Merlin Bird ID app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on your smartphone [ https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org ]. It’s a great opportunity to sharpen your observation skills and learn more about our local birdlife. What birds can you hear and see in the park?

OTHER EVENTS AT ROBBINS FARM PARK
ARLINGTON ASTRONOMY NIGHTS ’25 AT ROBBINS FARM PARK — HOSTED BY JEFF ALEXANDER

Astronomy Night, a seasonal opportunity for residents to view the night sky through a telescope, returned for the summer Saturday, June 21, at 8:30 p.m. The next event is July 12.
Local resident Jeffrey Alexander hosts these viewings multiple nights throughout the summer in Robbins Farm Park, by the benches that overlook Boston. Each evening the group has a specific target in mind — Saturday’s viewing is focused on catching a glimpse of Mars.
These viewings are informal events that are fun and educational for all ages. Those under five years old may have difficulty looking through the eyepiece of a telescope.
A full schedule of this month’s viewing dates is below:
2025 Astronomy Nights:
- June 21 at 8:30 p.m.: Mars has been slowly crossing the sky the last few months and this is our chance to see it before it is gone for the year. While we won’t be able to see a lot of detail since it is pretty far from us at the moment, we’ll see its shape and color and how it is different from seeing a star in the sky. This summer is pretty limited for planets, so we’ll take what we can get! Depending on how late we go, the moonless sky will allow for viewing some deep sky objects.
- July 12 at 9:15 p.m.: A moonless sky allows views to see some of the fainter objects way outside the solar system. Attendees can expect to see double stars, star clusters, and depending on the conditions, potentially a nebula or two. Light pollution could deter viewing.
- Aug. 2 at 8 p.m.: The Moon is a little over half full (a waxing, gibbous phase). The group will view the lunar mare (mah-ray) that were once thought to be seas of water, and viewers can see craters that are lit edge-on by the Sun’s light.
- Sept. 13 at 8:45 p.m.: This evening, the group will focus on Saturn once it has had a chance to come up over Boston. Saturn will be almost as close to Earth as it ever gets, its rings are expected to be in view.
Jeffrey Alexander organizes these viewings at Robbins Farm Park, 61 Eastern Ave.; they take place weather permitting. The Astronomy Nights website will have the latest updated information.
